Storm Window Cleaning Cincinnati

Storm windows are one of those features that older Cincinnati homes have in abundance and newer homeowners don't always fully understand. If you've moved into a home in Hyde Park, Mariemont, Mount Lookout, or any of the established neighborhoods throughout Greater Cincinnati where older housing stock is common, there's a good chance your home has storm windows on every opening. That means every window on your home has double the glass surfaces of a standard window. Two panes on the storm panel itself, two panes on the primary window behind it, and the gap between them. Getting storm windows truly clean means addressing all of those surfaces, not just what's visible from the outside or the inside. Most window cleaning companies don't do that. We do.

What Makes Storm Windows Different to Clean

A standard window has two surfaces to clean. The exterior face of the glass and the interior face of the glass. A storm window setup doubles that. The outside face of the storm panel, the inside face of the storm panel facing the gap, the outside face of the primary window also facing the gap, and the interior face of the primary window. That's four surfaces on every window opening instead of two.

If any one of those four surfaces is dirty the window will never look truly clean regardless of how many times the visible surfaces get wiped down. The two surfaces facing the gap between the storm and the primary window are the ones that almost always get overlooked. They're out of sight and most cleaning approaches never reach them. But when light comes through a storm window setup those interior facing surfaces affect what you see just as much as the outer faces. A cloudy film on either of those hidden surfaces makes the whole window look hazy from both inside and outside the home.

Cincinnati homeowners in older neighborhoods deal with this constantly. They have the outside of the storm cleaned and the inside of the primary window wiped down and the windows still don't look right. The problem is the surfaces in the middle that never get touched.

Storm Window Types Throughout Cincinnati

Older Cincinnati homes typically have one of two types of storm window setups and our cleaning process addresses both correctly.

Traditional removable storm panels are separate frames with glass that get installed over the primary windows seasonally. These panels sit in a channel or clip system around the window frame and are removed and stored during warmer months. Each panel has two glass surfaces that both need cleaning. The primary window behind it also has two surfaces. All four get cleaned as part of a complete storm window cleaning job.

Combination track style storm windows are the more modern version and are extremely common throughout Cincinnati and Butler County. These have two or three panels that slide up and down in tracks within a single frame permanently mounted over the primary window. The upper glass panel stays fixed. The lower panel slides up to allow ventilation through a screen panel that sits in the bottom track position. These windows have glass on multiple panels plus a screen and tracks that all need attention. We clean every panel, both the interior and exterior faces, and clean the tracks and frame channels as part of the job.

Our Storm Window Cleaning Process

We use the same professional tools and methods for storm windows as we do for all window cleaning throughout Greater Cincinnati and Butler County. Whether we clean the storm panels in place or remove them depends entirely on the specific setup of the home and what gives us the best access to all four glass surfaces on each window opening.

For the exterior facing surfaces we use our reverse osmosis water fed pole system where accessible, delivering purified water to the glass and frame through a soft brush that lifts and flushes away dirt, pollen, oxidation, and grime. Purified water dries completely spot free because all the minerals that cause water spots have been filtered out.

For the interior surfaces and detail work we use a professional mop and squeegee method that gives us precise control on each individual pane. The mop applies cleaning solution and lifts the dirt. The squeegee removes it cleanly and completely. Every surface on every storm window opening gets the same thorough treatment regardless of how easy or difficult it is to access.

The gap surfaces between the storm panel and the primary window are cleaned upon request. If you want every surface on every storm window addressed completely including the two interior facing surfaces in the gap, we include that in the service. It adds time to the job because of the additional surfaces involved but the result is storm windows that are genuinely clean all the way through rather than just on the visible outer faces.

Why Cincinnati's Climate is Hard on Storm Windows

Storm windows take a specific kind of abuse from Cincinnati's weather that standard windows don't experience in the same way. The gap between the storm panel and the primary window creates a contained space where moisture, condensation, and debris accumulate over time. Cincinnati's humid summers cause condensation in that gap regularly. Freeze thaw cycles in winter force moisture into the frame channels and leave mineral deposits as it evaporates. Pollen and fine debris work their way into the gap through the weep points in the storm frame and settle on the interior facing glass surfaces where they never get any natural rinsing from rain.

Older storm window frames throughout Hyde Park, Kenwood, and Mariemont have frame channels that have accumulated years of debris and oxidation. The tracks on combination style storms in homes throughout Anderson Township and Montgomery collect the same kind of compacted grime we see in standard window tracks, affecting how the panels slide and seal.

Regular professional storm window cleaning keeps all of that under control and prevents the kind of long term buildup that makes storm windows look permanently cloudy and affects how well they function as a thermal barrier.

What Properly Cleaned Storm Windows Look Like

Homeowners who have their storm windows professionally cleaned for the first time after years of basic maintenance cleaning are consistently surprised by the result. The difference between storm windows that have had all four surfaces properly cleaned versus storm windows that have only had the outermost and innermost surfaces wiped down is dramatic when natural light is coming through. The hazy, slightly diffused look that many Cincinnati homeowners have come to accept as just how their old storm windows look turns out to be entirely a cleaning issue. Properly cleaned storm windows on a historic home in Hyde Park or Mariemont look as clear and sharp as modern insulated glass units.

How Long Does Storm Window Cleaning Take

Storm window cleaning takes longer than standard window cleaning by definition because of the additional glass surfaces involved. A home covered in storm windows has double the panes of a home with standard windows. That means double the cleaning time on the glass alone before accounting for any additional work on tracks, frames, and gap surfaces. We assess every storm window home before we start and give you a clear time and cost estimate upfront so there are no surprises.

We service homes throughout Greater Cincinnati and Butler County including Hyde Park, Anderson Township, Blue Ash, Kenwood, Mariemont, Montgomery, Madeira, Indian Hill, Oakley, Mount Lookout, West Chester, Mason, Oxford, Harrison, Loveland, and all surrounding areas. If your storm windows have never been fully cleaned on all four surfaces, call us and we will show you what they're supposed to look like.
